Why You are going to Love European Benching ~ a Basic Primer

HOW IT WORKS
The hall is set up as a series of Pods or Shapes. These can be rectangular or irregular, depending on the available space in the showhall. Cages are set up around the perimeter of the Pod, with doors facing into the Pod, and the backs of the cages facing outward. Openings are left at convenient places for exhibitors to enter and exit the Pod. A diagram of a sample Pod is at the bottom of this page. Cages are covered with curtains on the top and sides only--clear plastic is used on the back. Exhibitors bench inside the Pod, while spectators are directed to the aisles between the Pods, where they can look at the cats through the cage backs. While this set up takes up much more space in the showhall, it has many advantages for the exhibitors and spectators alike.

SPACE
Lots of it. Room to move around. There is a ton of space inside the Pod for all of your "stuff." Not only are the exhibitors supplied with chairs (not shown on the diagram!), but there is room inside the Pod for normal-sized tables. These tables are provided by the club for communal use: snacks, paperwork, card games . . . No more tripping over things and spectators just to get to your cat.

SECURITY
The space inside the Pod is reserved for exhibitors and those they chose to bring inside (e.g. kitten buyers). It is off limits for casual spectators. This will be posted. Given the size of the Pod, odds are that someone will always be around their cage keeping an eye on things, and an outsider will really stand out. You don't have to keep your precious belongings within easy reach of anyone strolling by. And no one will be bothering you at that critical moment when you're late and prepping your cat for the ring.

GOOD TRAFFIC FLOW
With all of the aisles clear of obstructions (chairs, coolers, grooming tables, etc.), spectators will gravitate to the edges to look at the cats, leaving the center of the aisles free for exhibitors going to/coming from rings.

SOCIABILITY
It's party time! You've got space, tables and your friends. When you're not busy showing, the atmosphere is wonderful for "hanging out" and shooting the breeze. If you want to socialize with the spectators (to sell kittens!), buy a groom space. You can park a kitten or two in the groom space and sit comfortably on one side while talking to the spectators walking by on the other side. You have total control over how much interaction you want with the gate, and when you want to have it. It's a nice feeling.

A SPECIAL NOTE
In order to make this event a positive one for our spectators, we have a special request for those of you who use security cages. Please bring the cages that have some visibility through the back so that your cats can be seen. If you don't have any cages that meet the criteria, consider using a standard metal cage for this show. The club will have clear plastic cut to the proper size available at the showhall (for a nominal fee) to cover cage backs for those who need it. Thank you from Cats of the Finger Lakes for considering our request.
